Joel Peter Witkin

Joel Peter Witkin was born in New York in 1939.  He is a photographer who often uses the themes of death, dismembered bodies and physically deformed people.  He often uses dwarves, hermaphrodites and transsexuals in his works to create unnerving but visually interesting pictures.

Witkin takes a lot of his inspiration from classical paintings and religious iconography.

In a previous post I wrote about the imagery of Saint Sebastian and the scene of his death by arrows.  It was a work of Joel Peter Witkin's that I came across when researching my mood board for my uncanny rabbit proposal.

This work is Witkin's take on Botticelli's Birth of Venus.

The work of Witkin fits in perfectly with our 'Uncanny' theme and indeed, some of our hybrid creations have an echo of Witkin about them:
