Week 5: Studio - Set Building

In our week 5 session we built the set that is to become the bedroom for the bedroom scene featuring the levitating bed, the uncanny miniature creature and the smoking keyhole.

We began by discussing the shape of the room, the shots that would be required and how much of the set would be in each shot.  We had a basic floor plan and shape to work from and set about building the set using the flats and door.

Initial floor plan idea:

The flats were erected (remembering that at least two people must work together to carry and secure the flats), they were bolted and secured with weights and, where necessary, new holes were drilled for the A frames to be bolted into place.

The next step was to strip the existing wallpaper and make the surfaces flat, ready to be repapered, and painted.

Then we papered the walls with lining paper ready to be painted when it dried out.  I have done a lot of wallpapering in my time and was really proud of the section that I did on the set.  I was good at organising, and joining in with, the measuring, pasting, hanging and smoothing of the wallpaper.

After we had hung the wallpaper we painted the walls red.

The plan is to have drapes and wall coverings in the room, along with lots of photos in frames, like a Victorian gentleman's study.  These are the photos that I put up on the group Facebook site when we were discussing the look of the set.  We are going for dark wood and drapes and ornate fireplace.
