In our workshop induction we were taken on a tour of the Sheaf Building workshops and shown how to use tools correctly.
The first things that we were told about was the importance of using safety goggles, masks and ear defenders, and to keep the work area clean and tidy.
The plug sockets are suspended from the ceiling above the workbenches. It is important that the correct power tool is used for the job. We were shown how to operate the Jigsaw which makes freehand cuts and then had a go at using it.
This is a Jigsaw and what can be achieved with it. (Photos taken from internet.)
We were also shown how to use a power drill, and how to change the drill bit.
We were shown the main joints that we would most likely use in set building, and how to mark up the wood, mark the waste sections to be gotten rid of, secure the wood in the vice, use a saw, then chisel to take out the unrequired sections and how to drill holes and insert screws to secure the joints.
(Following example pictures from internet.)
After this we were shown the stores and what materials are available to us. All this was really useful to know for when it comes to set building and dressing.
It was a very useful and informative session and the tutor was very thorough and approachable when we asked questions.
For future reference there is a great many woodworking DIY sites on the internet that show how to achieve different projects. I like to be prepared before I start a task so I will make sure that I have a plan of action before I start any workshop projects and know what I am doing, and how to do it safely.
